LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II
TO THE PEOPLE OF POLAND

My beloved Fellow-countrymen,

I am writing these words to you on the day on which it fell upon one of the sons of our country to assume the ministry of bishop on St Peter's chair. I cannot fail to address you all, brothers and sisters, children of beloved Poland, precisely on this day on which, owing to the inscrutable plans of Providence, I, hitherto metropolitan archbishop of Krakow, find myself obliged to leave the ancient chair of St Stanislaus to assume the Roman one of St Peter, and with it concern for the whole universal Church. It is difficult to think and speak of that without a very deep emotion. It seems that the human heart—and in particular the Polish heart—is not sufficient to contain such an emotion.

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS JOHN PAUL II
TO THE ARCHDIOCESE OF KRAKOW

To the beloved Archdiocese of Krakow, to the whole People of God, to my brothers in the Episcopate, to Priests and to male and female Religious families—to everyone!

I am writing these words to you, beloved Brothers and Sisters, at the exceptional and unexpected moment when—by the will of Our Lord Jesus Christ, expressed by the conclave of Cardinals after the death of Pope John Paul I of unforgettable memory—I leave the Church of Krakow, the episcopal chair of St Stanislaus, to assume St Peter's chair in Rome.

PRESIDENTE DE LA COMISIÓN PONTIFICIA PARA LA PASTORAL
DE LAS MIGRACIONES Y DEL TURISMO

Señor cardenal:

El Papa Juan Pablo II, siguiendo la costumbre establecida por su llorado predecesor Pablo VI, tiene la satisfacción de impulsar las celebraciones del "Día del Emigrante", fijadas por los Episcopados en épocas diversas del Año litúrgico. El Santo Padre realiza este gesto también en memoria del Papa Juan Pablo I, hijo de emigrantes y muy especialmente sensible a las necesidades de todos los emigrantes, a quienes manifestó su profundo afecto, a pesar de que la brevedad de su ministerio pontificio no le permitió testimoniarlo mediante actos oficiales.
